Seahorse Rescue @ Lookout Beach
The power of the Plett community was again in full-force last week when the call sounded to rescue seahorses that had been washed up on Lookout Beach. The power of social media allowed messages to circulate via various groups informing the public of their stranding.
Hundreds of Knysna seahorses were washed out of the Keurbooms Estuary by floodwaters after heavy rains and storms battered the country last week. This flooding event, coupled with a Spring tide, resulted in the seahorses being washed out of their eel-grass sanctuary by a thin, fast-moving channel of floodwater that moved through the Keurbooms estuary. The tiny creatures were carried into the ocean, from where the current deposited them (by good fortune) on the easily accessible, Lookout Beach.
Armed with buckets and Plett’s usual community spirit, volunteers arrived to collect the stranded creatures to hand them over to Cape Nature who supervised the rescue operation together with Plett Stranding Network, Plett Nature and Orca Foundation.
This delicate species is notoriously difficult to spot given their tiny size (only growing to approximately 12cms) and how well they can camouflage themselves in the surroundings. Hippocampus capensis is endemic to the South African coastline and are only known to be found in three estuaries of the world, those being the Keurbooms River in Plett, the Knysna Lagoon in Knysna and in the Swartvlei system in Sedgefield.
Some of our agents were amongst the throngs of rescuers that day, braving inclement weather (and massive amounts of seafoam) to help rescue these tiny, endangered animals. A proud display of Plett’s community’s passion to help - even when it is the smallest creatures in need.
